How To: Make a Small Room Feel and Look Bigger

Often times people think that darker colors and closed windows make their house cozier and more welcoming! Well I am here to tell you that they are wrong. I know from a woman's point of view that darker colored clothing mean a slimmer looking waistline, well the same goes with your home. The darker the color of paint, the smaller the room will appear. Windows have a big effect on the size of your home all together as opposed to just the room on its own. A window providing light causes the furthest corners of the room to be seen allowing it to feel and appear more open. The sun is also proven to be a motivating light along with rays that welcome everything in a friendly manner. I found a few pictures on the internet to help prove my point a little bit. Now they were found through google so naturally, they will not be of the same room; but the first photo is darkly painted with no window light and it is also dimly lit. (I would also throw in that it is poorly decorated as well, but that's just me.) The second picture has a window and still a dark color scheme (and better taste in décor) but it is seemingly much bigger than the first photo. These are only, however, examples of a dark shade of paint. Lighter shades of paint naturally open the area on their own as seen in photo three!
I personally think lighter colors bring a sort of fresh rejuvenating feeling, especially in rooms with windows! Another tip to make a room feel larger are mirrors! They work absolute wonders! The smaller the room, the bigger the mirror! It sort of assumes the place of a window, but the reflection of the rest of the room creates this optical illusion that makes the room appear larger! I know mirrors are one of my favorite decorating accessories and hopefully these tips have helped!
