Brown Paper Bag Wallpaper

This project originally started as a texture background for the paint in my bathroom walls. Eventually I grew to just LOVE the vintage brown look that it gave the little room. We moved from the house that originally hosted this project so I thought I would share my technique this second time around. I call it the brown paper bag effect. First you will need: rolls of brown paper bag material, wallpaper glue, a tray to dip your pieces in, gloves, a old sponge and a squeegie tool to even out the air bubbles while placing it on the wall. This is the wallpaper glue that I prefer to use and it works wonders. Your first step is to take your rolls of paper and shred them into a variety of sizes. Be careful not to make them to small (after all you are covering a wall) but also do not make them too big; it can sometimes cause a greater amount of air bubbles to go unnoticed. Make two separate piles of pieces. Straight edged pieces and filler pieces. These pieces will be so that you will have a nice even finish on the lining of your walls. Your next step will be to mix the wallpaper glue with a decent amount of water to make it spreadable but not runny. We used a paint tray to hold our glue. Next take a piece of shredded material and soak it in the glue using the sponge to assist its ability to be lathered. Next take the lathered piece of paper and press it snug against the wall. Once it is in the desired location, take the squeegie and lock all of the air bubbles out from underneath it. Make sure that even on the wall, the paper is soaking wet or it will dry with a crusty appearance. Also if an air bubble is found after the paper is already dry or partially dry: DO NOT try to go over and fix it, you will tear paper and force yourself to start over. Repeat last couple steps until the desired area is completely covered. Good Luck!

  1. My question is, I have this on basement walls in house I am buying, makes it too dark for me. Can I put regular wall paper over it? Paint??
